6 Reasons Why Most Bloggers Fail To Make Money From Blogging

So you want to know why most bloggers fail to make money with their blogs? Read on… There’s certainly a ‘love and hate’ relationship going on between blogging and making money. Some bloggers love making money from blogging and some don’t.

According to Blogging.org, upwards of 81% of bloggers never make $100 from blogging… ever…

So why do most bloggers fail to make money? Let’s take a look
Why Bloggers Fail To Make Money

6 Reasons Why Bloggers Fail To Make Money With Their Blogs

1. You’re in a too competitive niche
For starters most bloggers take the approach to blogging by venturing into either the wrong niche or a too competitive niche. They see so many others blogging in the make money online’ or ‘online business’ or ‘blogging tips’ niche and they often follow the pack.
Whilst there is nothing wrong with this approach, just as long as you are able to provide something totally new and diverse, and something new and fresh each time you publish a post, in a saturated niche, otherwise I would advise anyone wanting to start a money making blog to take the time to research the market and find a niche that is perhaps not so competitive or saturated, and one that you can comfortably say that you’ll actually enjoy blogging in for many years to come. If you don’t have a passion for the topic you blog about you won’t survive the long haul in my experience.
A couple of useful tools to use for doing keyword and niche research are: Google AdWords Keyword Tool which I’m sure you’re familiar with, or the Keyword Niche Finder by WordStream.
2. Lack of consistency
The second reason why most bloggers fail to make money from bloggingis because of their lack of consistency.
Blogging is far from just being about creating a simple 50 page website and placing some AdSense ads on it, and then hoping that it will make you money.
Don’t get me wrong it probably will make you some money, but don’t expect anything more than just a few cents.
When I started blogging back in 2010 I relied primarily on AdSense for monetization and it worked, even with around 500 unique pieces of content with reasonably good SEO, I was able to make 100 to 150 dollars a month from AdSense, I never planned to make money from the blog, but the small income it generated came in very handy, and that’s because I was consistent with it.
You need to look at it like this: Blogging is more about creating and putting out unique, quality and useful content on a consistent basis, so that means stuff that will help your audience solve problems, including a lot of evergreen content.
Even if you’re just monetizing with AdSense and nothing else, the more valuable content you have ranking high in the search engines, the more money you will likely to make with AdSense or what ever other method of blog monetization you’re using, so no matter what always be consistent and patient too.
3. Poor SEO
Search engine traffic is still the number one traffic source that all bloggers work hard to try and increase, no blog could possibly make real money without adequate search engine traffic (if you feel differently on this please let me know in the comment section below), which is why on-page and off site search engine optimization is so important if you want your content to rank high in the search engines, otherwise you will have relatively low traffic.

4. Low overall traffic
We talked about search engine traffic, but having low traffic in general is the one single reason why most bloggers fail to make money from blogging, it doesn’t matter if you have the best content ever, it doesn’t matter if you are offering the most amazing products for sale, or have the most amazing reviews, if you have no traffic and no reader engagement, you simply won’t make any money.
So asides creating great content; marketing, sharing your content with an engaging audience through social media, email and other content marketing platforms, combined with doing SEO are all essential for increasing traffic to your blog, building an audience and making money from blogging.
5. Nothing to sell
OK, so you have a blog, you have a ton of great content, you have the traffic, but what are you actually offering? I visit a lot of great blogs everyday, and the one thing that I don’t see many bloggers doing is offering a product of their own for sale. Whether it’s an eBook, a premium plugin or a WordPress theme, e-courses, even a physical product I don’t care! If you can create it and there is a demand for it, you need to have something to it, or you’re again leaving money on the table.
6. No lead capture page
Finally, this is perhaps one of the biggest mistakes still being made by a lot of new bloggers today, not having a ‘lead capture page’.
Yes you have made the effort to add an email opt-in box in your sidebar and you’re giving away a cool eBook, so what? So are a million other people.
If you don’t have a lead capture page, you’re leaving losing out on new potential subscribers and customers.
So there you have troops, my 6 reasons why I believe a lot of bloggers fail to make money from blogging, and I’m sure you’re anxious to add your bit in too, so please leave me a comment below as always.
If I could suggest one last tip; making money from blogging is challenging but if you can find a low competitive niche that you can monetize well, go for it. But don’t place all your eggs in one basket, there are literally many other ways to create passive income online, and we’ll look at them more in depth in another post.
