UrbanWonderer Turns Your Smartphone Into a Tour Guide

History buffs and urban explorers alike can get a sense of New York and its best sights, without having to read an entire guidebook. UrbanWonderer, the free iPhone and Android app created and narrated by licensed NYC tour guide Steven Craig Sickles lets you select from a variety of self-guided audio tours through the city.
This way, you can ditch the clunky guidebook and travel through the city’s neighborhoods while getting tips on the best restaurants, museums and parks, and exploring each area’s history. You can even check out where famous films and TV shows were shot.

Tours take you through some of the city’s most popular spots, such as Times Square or Soho. Additionally, the UrbanWonderer app offers a map of the Chelsea art galleries. Icons on your map indicate places of interest, and tapping them will allow you to listen to an audio clip containing relevant information.

The app’s creators say new tours will be available for both iOS and Android every two to three weeks, thus making sure you’re equipped with the most up-to-date information. While the tours mainly include Manhattan destinations so far (only Williamsburg is representing Brooklyn), the app's website suggests tours of other NYC boroughs will be on their way.
The app promises to not let you stand out as an obvious tourist, by providing such handy information as a pronunciation guide for Houston Street (it’s pronounced "How-ston," not "Hew-ston"). And if you keep listening, you’ll also find out that most of the Houston street signs are incorrect, since they were named after a man who spelled his last name with two "u"s, not two "o"s.
if you would use an app like this. You can get the app for free at UrbanWonderer.com, the iTunes storeor at Google Play.
